We are not only setting the course, but also 1888 switches. 🚂   Convinced of the cause, and aware of the importance of diligence: With the valuable help of seven federal ministries, Germany's Core Green Bond Team has once again, and in the utmost care, compiled a comprehensive piece. The Green Bond Impact Report 2022 https://lnkd.in/eKYpcJts provides reliable information about the impact on climate, environment and nature of green expenditure that has been allocated to the proceeds of the #GreenBunds issued (and tapped) in 2022.   A brief sample, in a nutshell: 🌱 With the eligible green expenditure for the conservation of nature, landscape, forests and #Biodiversity, more than four and a half million hectares were protected or renaturalized. 🌱 A considerable amount was invested in maintaining the rail network, for example the renewal of 2,023 km of track and 1,888 switches. 🌱 Further parts of the expenditure helped to preserve almost 1 million hectares of coastal and flood protection areas. 🌱 Millions of tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions have been avoided through the use of the federal funds. Due to different methodological approaches, these savings are not reported in aggregated terms, but individually and specifically (current report, p. 7/8).   These 👆 few lines alone are a testament to the various effects of the diversified expenditure portfolio and the wide range of funding measures. Overall, and in particular for special #Sovereign spending areas such as #InternationalCooperation or fundamental #Research, the new impact report shows a high degree of transparency and clearly reveals the strict requirements and examinations to ensure that the measures and projects carried out and allocated to the Green Bunds are ✅ truly #green.   There are many more details in the report itself and on our website https://lnkd.in/eWms-E_b .

Sparkassen in Bavaria lose 10,000 employees Over the next ten years, the Bavarian Sparkassen will lose around a third of their workforce as around 10,000 employees retire. This massive loss of staff is part of a larger trend in the financial sector, as other institutions are also facing similar challenges. Demographic change is hitting an already tight labor market where skilled workers are in short supply. In the second quarter of 2024, there were almost 39,000 vacancies in the sector, an increase of ten percent compared to the same period last year. To counteract this impending staff shortage, the Bavarian savings banks are increasingly focusing on new recruitment strategies. A particular focus is on training career changers. The number of retrainees at the Sparkassenakademie Bayern has risen from 20 to 248 in the last ten years. This group increasingly includes immigrants and university dropouts who are looking for a second career opportunity in banking. Overall, the savings banks are facing major challenges, but also opportunities to renew their workforce through innovative recruitment measures and the involvement of new target groups. With the retirement of long-serving specialists comes the retirement of accumulated expertise and experience.

Fair Finance Guide Germany (FFG) is a project coordinated by the NGO Facing Finance. FFG have released their 8th updated finance guide to examine whether and how German banks respect social, environmental and human rights. The highest scores again go to the alternative banks and church banks GLS Bank, Tomorrow2, Ethikbank, KD-Bank, Triodos Bank and Pax-Bank. Overall, German banks are improving in terms of transparency and sustainability, but still lag behind Swedish, Belgian or Dutch banks, as shown by the FFG in other countries. Deep sea mining is increasingly emerging as a key potential threat to our oceans, as well as a risk for financiers. The FFG has, for the first time, recognised deep sea mining (DSM) as a new sustainability criterion. The DSM Campaign has been working with FFG on this issue. FFG’s research has uncovered that 11 of the 20 banks studied directly exclude financing DSM projects. These include Apobank, Deutsche Bank, DZ Bank, Ethikbank, GLS, KD-Bank, Pax-Bank, Sparkasse Köln-Bonn, Tomorrow, Triodos, UniCredit. We are encouraged in terms of those banks standing up against exploiting the deep sea. However, a number of these banks continue to finance and invest in those who are supporting the industry, such as Deme Group whose deep-sea exploratory division is Global Sea Mineral Resources (GSR). Deutsche Bank and DZ Bank are shareholders of Deme. We would encourage those banks to use their shareholding to discourage DSM activities, and to divest if this is not acted on.

Last week we did it! We asked ourselves - Are we “Fit 4 Purpose” in the financial sector? at the Financial Sector Retreat 2024 of KfW's Development Bank. First and foremost: Over the last months, I had the pleasure to plan, organize, and implement the event with such a great priceless team. Kudus to Franziska Salzer, Lena Büttner, Nico Y. Ludwig, Carlo Humpert, Trixi Pairan, Anton Schroeder and Cédric Lützenkirchen. It was a lot of work, but so much more fun. Special thanks go to our two wonderful moderators Luise Richter and Dr. Ron Rother! The retreat itself centered around three topics (i) private capital mobilization, (ii) new green finance, and (iii) climate and risk financing and insurance, also applying session on digitalization and gender in these areas. Over 150 colleagues and experts from all over the world gathered to discuss for two intensive days. Do we understand the needs and demands of our partner countries? How can we support the green transformation of financial institutions, optimize private capital mobilization or minimizing climate risk in our projects to achieve a greater development impact? As a climate risk expert in KfW, I was especially interested to follow the discussions on CDRFI. How to develop innovative instruments and insurance schemes to help vulnerable communities cope with the impacts of climate events and natural disasters? In a hybrid panel with Lindelwe Lesley Ndlovu from the African Risk Capacity, Shakira Mustapha from Centre for Disaster Protection, Sylvia M. from World Bank (Zep-Re), Catherine Simonet from Agence Française de Développement and Michael Roth from Munich Re, the challenges in climate risk financing were addressed and clearly stated. Thanks to Luise Richter for shaping and moderating this very intensive session. Furthermore, experts Lea Sarah Kulick and Jennifer Phillips from the Global Shield Secretariat presented the Global-Shield Initiative followed by discussions with Annette Dr. Detken on the Global Shield’s Solutions Platform, Regional Risk Pools, and with Simon Wild on the Global Risk Modelling Alliance. Furthermore, we had Marcel Hastermann as a risk expert in KfW to learn about ESG risk modelling and how climate risk comes in. Thanks to all participants for taking the time to join and discuss. I am convinced, only knowledge that is shared, can grow. I am now even more enthusiastic than I have already been before. Lets keep talking, discussing, and testing. 👏☀️👷 national parliament of the Federal Republic of Germany finally approved the new solar Programm (Solarpaket 1) and climate protection law after months and months (since August 2023) of postponements. This pending approval confused consumers and clients which delayed their decision „to go solar“. Major key points: ✅ This means that 19 gigawatts would have to be added annually in the future in order to achieve the expansion target of 215 gigawatts for solar in 2030. According to the federal government's draft law on the solar package, half of the new solar systems should be on buildings, especially roofs, and the other half on open spaces such as fields. ✅ In addition, hurdles for so-called tenant electricity, where the electricity for a residential building comes from the on-site solar system, should be reduced. Solar on the roof should come with improved funding conditions, Increased subsidy rates and uncomplicated billing options for self-used electricity will become much more attractive. ✅ In the case of balcony power plants, which are becoming increasingly popular, it is intended that they no longer have to be reported to the network operator.

The town of Haßfurt shows how the energy transition is being implemented at municipal level: The municipal utility began switching to renewable energies back in 2000. Eight years later, the first smart meters were installed. Storage solutions have been established and expanded since 2015. Stadtwerke Haßfurt now produces more electricity from wind turbines than can be utilised. Using power-to-gas technology, this is converted into hydrogen and can therefore be stored in large quantities. The municipal utility operates its own electrolyser for this purpose. Haßfurt proves it: The transformation towards a climate-neutral and resilient energy system works with a mix of green electricity and new gases, such as hydrogen.
