About us

Baader Planetarium is a middle sized enterprise having 50 years experience in producing and installing astronomical equipment. More than 600 observatory domes of sizes from 2 m up to 8.5 m have been mounted, together with a large number of projection domes for planetarium installations up to 10 m in diameter. Observatory domes serve for a multitude of applications for scientific use around the world specialized to work under the hardest of environments, with installations in Antarctica (Dome C - 84°C) to high Arctic regions such as Svalbard (NyAalesund -45°C), Ellesmere Island (Eureca -60°C), in desert conditions with hermetic seals against dust and a number of high Alpine locations. Also the company specializes in door key ready Observatories for amateur, university, scientific and commercial application. We build and integrate high end robotic telescopes with apertures up to 2 meter as european sole distributor of Planewave Instruments USA and 10 Micron ITALY, alongside many more brands. Our customers are Institutions, Universities and Observatories and companies around the world, among them AWI(Alfred Wegener Institute for polar research); MPI (Max Planck Institution), German Museum Munich; University of Hamburg (PIST-Project), The Open University UK (PIRATE-project), and many others.

Updates

  • We’re delighted to share an update from our U.S. trip: Our CEO, Johannes Baader, and CFO, Anne Ettmayr, recently visited our long-standing partner PlaneWave Instruments in Michigan. Together with CEO Richard Hedrick, they enjoyed a behind-the-scenes look at PlaneWave’s production facilities and discussed forward-looking strategies for both companies.   Next stop is the Northeast Astronomy Forum (#NEAF), where we look forward to engaging with fellow industry experts as well as many dedicated amateur astronomers. After NEAF, our CEO will be joined by our Sales Manager Herwig Diessner and heading to Celestron, LLC. to continue building strong partnerships and exploring new ideas in the astronomy community.

    You got to imagine it!

This week we had the honore to unwrap our first Miratlas weatherstation for one of our customers. It delivers atmospheric measurements that crucial to ensure the continuity of service for optical groundstations. They also address emerging challenges such as contrail detection, air pollution and climate change.

  • In 2000, a 5.3 m Baader Classic Dome was installed at the Sirius Observatory in Switzerland. Since then, the facility has been in continuous operation—used for public outreach, educational programs, and astrophotography by the observatory team. For more than two decades, the dome has withstood the challenging alpine weather conditions without issue. In 2024 we had to revisit the dome for the first time for small maintenance work on the shutter relief system. Other than that the dome has worked flawlessly for almost 25 years, which once again confirms the long-term reliability and structural integrity of our observatories. We thank the team at Sternwarte SIRIUS for their trust and long-standing collaboration. More images on our Observatory World Map: https://lnkd.in/daWnNfun

  • 2.3M Baader AllSky Dome – Private Observatory Installation Building a private observatory requires precise planning and expert execution. In November 2024, our customer Isabel Streit fulfilled this vision with a 2.3-meter Baader AllSky Dome. "The Baader team impressed me with their deep expertise, precise planning, and efficient execution. I was particularly amazed by the flawless installation of the dome – every step was executed perfectly." At Baader Planetarium, we strive to deliver observatory solutions suitable for both amateur astronomers and professional research projects. 🔗 More about this installation: https://lnkd.in/dCE_NCKR

  • Making good use of the sunny weather at our hometown Mammendorf in Bavaria. This instrumentation is for a customer for whom we installed a 4.5m AllSky dome last year already (not yet public on our world map). This solar setup consists of PlaneWave Instruments CDK 20 and a #TEC 160 telescopes on a #10micron GM 4000 HPS mount. The CDK with an IMP 85 installed at the back allows for white light solar observation and photography while the TEC is equipped for H-alpha observation. All of this is managed by our Baader Observatory Management System (OMS) which allows live streaming of the images. More detailed information about this project will follow in the next months. #solar #astronomy #planewave #baader #solarimaging #solarimaginghalpha #astrophotography #halpha #whitelight
