A recent study conducted by Chinese researchers sought to determine if using organic fertilizer and incorporating biochar as a soil conditioner could effectively reduce agricultural reliance on traditional chemical fertilizers. Their experiment extensively tested multiple variations and ratios of organic and inorganic fertilizers, no fertilizers, and fertilizers combined with biochar in randomized field trials. The results clearly showed that organic fertilizer combined with biochar facilitated better nutrient distribution in the crops leading to improved crop health, strength, and yield—a strong case for reducing our reliance on chemical fertilizers. We know that assessing and evaluating BCR technologies and processes is no easy task. If you’re looking to kickstart a biochar project or invest in the BCR industry, it’s essential to ask the right questions and properly evaluate the options to ensure that you come away with the best technology, the highest quality biochar, and the maximum carbon removal credit potential. In this edition of PYREG Pointers, we take a look at the topic of ‘feedstock’ which is a crucial factor in determining biochar quality and consistency. 📢 New project alert! PYREG is working with an amazing partner to build a biochar facility in Spain. PYREG negative-emissions technology will be used to convert local calamity wood into high-quality biochar that will be used to revive washed-out lands, improve and condition local agricultural soil, and supplement livestock feed and construction materials. Additionally, the excess energy produced from the pyrolysis process will be integrated with an ORC system to co-generate electricity and recover warm water for drying purposes. Stay tuned for more updates! https://lnkd.in/g-D9BseN #Biochar #BCR #CDR #NetZeroTechnology #Sustainability #SustainableAgriculture #CarbonRemoval #Decarbonization #ClimateTech

A recent report from Stanford University researchers highlights a critical issue for the BCR industry—the current methodology used for assessing biochar carbon storage potential does not provide an accurate evaluation. Currently, most biochar durability assessments only consider the hydrogen-to-carbon ratio, but science has proven this approach to be too limiting. To accurately measure BCR durability, we need to account for all factors such as soil type, environmental conditions, feedstock variability, and the pyrolysis technology used. Correcting this outdated methodology will help companies, investors, and the world realize the true value of biochar.
