Core Competence reveals new dimension of business education with Adventure-based Learning(TM)

Playful role-based interactive online scenarios specially adapted to the individual needs of corporations and their employees impart knowledge more efficiently than traditional educational methods.

"With Adventure-based Learning(TM) we have developed a training method which makes education fun," says Karl Berger, managing director of Core-Competence GmbH. Since 2007 the company from Munich has offered its customers special and individualized playful role-based online scenarios which can train employees and partners quickly and efficiently. When they use Adventure-based Learning(TM) , companies experience a revolutionary kind of IT-based knowledge training and business acumen and skills teaching.

In the interactive learning scenarios which combine knowledge and its application in a way which makes education fun, users can immediately put into practice what they have just learned. This leads demonstrably to better retention rates and thus to more efficient and successful learning. Adventure-based Learning(TM) appeals to the participants' playful instincts. A virtual coach accompanies the "playful learner" through the adventure and motivates him to face up to the challenges. The feedback provided by the online coach helps users to acquire more knowledge as the scenario progresses and increase their competence through real-life work-related training.

"Before Adventure-based Learning(TM) came along, there was no system on the market with which one could train such a large number of people sustainably and efficiently in such a short space of time," says Core Competence managing director Berger as he describes the advantages of the new playful learning method. Traditional learning procedures take up a lot of time and money. On top of this there are hidden costs such as, for example, the time employees are absent from work while they attend training sessions. Furthermore, e-learning methods currently available provide participants with little or no opportunity for interaction. They are usually left to their own devices, and for this reason companies receive little information of a measurable kind about whether or not learning has been a success.

On the other hand, the Adventure-based Learning(TM) method combines knowledge and application on one platform. In the interactive scenarios employees are given real-life tasks which have to be solved in a realistic and efficient manner. The alternation between compact learning units and the following application enhances the users' knowledge and creates transparency about their educational progress. Adventure-based Learning(TM) runs on a hosted web-based platform and can thus be used online at any time and from anywhere. Participants can individualize the training process and determine the learning speed themselves. Thus the scenarios can be interrupted at any point and later resumed. Furthermore, there is no limit to the number of participants on the online platform. Compared to traditional tuition methods, Adventure-based Learning(TM) clearly offers the better cost-benefit ratio. With the new method corporations can significantly reduce their training investment.

New markets place greater demands on the corporations And quickly changing markets make increasingly high demands on the service and sales capabilities of the employees. It is important to keep acquiring new knowledge and to brush up one's knowledge. However, traditional methods such as traditional blended learning, e-learning and virtual classrooms soon reach the limits of their usefulness. It is often simply a matter of imparting knowledge and nothing else. These systems are not particularly flexible and cannot be adapted to individual learning parameters such as time and speed. Furthermore, a generation of managers is now coming into its own which grew up with digital media and computer games.

Core-Competence GmbH reacted at an early stage to the changing challenges in the field of established learning methods. The Adventure-based Learning(TM) method incorporates recent research findings on learning, memory and retention. On top of this the company works together closely with universities in order to support more research in the field of electronic training procedures, retention of content and thus the measurement of return on investment (ROI).

Adventure-based Learning(TM) scenarios can be individualized to suit the requirements of the customer. The developers of Core Competence need no more than twelve weeks in order to develop an interactive scenario. On the basis of a structured procedure Core Competence experts take companies from scenario planning and goal definition to design and development and thence to implementation and progress tracking. During the rollout, Core Competence provides a comprehensive launch package which gives customers a large number of tips and tricks on implementation, and describes experiences from successfully completed projects. Adventure-based Learning(TM) makes it possible to depict all sorts of different scenarios. The palette includes sales adventures, service adventures, project adventures, behaviour adventures and performance adventures.

Today corporations are already training thousands of employees with the new method. They include industry leaders such as Fujitsu-Siemens Computers (FSC), Telekom and Microsoft. The world's biggest software manufacturer in Germany supports its partners with the new pedagogical concept. In the "Open License Sales Adventure" sales employees play through a concrete license sale from customer enquiry to clinching the deal. A virtual coach accompanies the players through the sales adventure. As they proceed, they get direct feedback on their actions and all they need to know in order to improve their sales pitch.

"The participant has the possibility of immediately trying out and applying playfully what he has learnt in the framework of a real-life project," says Yahya Akdeniz from the License Sales Department of the Microsoft partner Actebis Peacock. "The Adventure demonstrates how to approach customers and how to talk to different kinds of customer."

Akdeniz also emphasizes the advantages of the new method. In contrast to traditional training methods the playful scenario was more fun. “There was a playful ambition to complete the training and to do it successfully.”
Adventure-based Learning™ is quickly becoming the leading educational tool
Analysts believe that playful training methods such as Adventure-based Learning™ will become increasingly important in the years to come. The experts of Gartner Consulting have worked out that, for example, it would make it possible to train more employees in a shorter space of time. On top of this playful learning leads to greater efficiency. In the real-life scenarios employees can play through concrete situations from their later working lives risk-free. Additionally, the playful environment motivates the players and leads to a higher level of concentration. The Gartner Consulting analysts predict that for this reason the vast majority of corporations will as early as 2011 consider playful learning methods to constitute a critical component of their employee training programmes.
“Web-based training is the next generation in training,” emphasizes Core Competence managing director Berger. “Since corporations are becoming larger and larger and employee fluctuation continues to increase, there is a growing need for standardized, fast and efficient training solutions. Methods such as Adventure-based Learning™ will profit considerably from this trend.” Core-Competence GmbH, the market leader, hopes to enhance its position in this educational segment and to play a dominant role in the ongoing development of this pioneering method.
